Love the Ocean this Valentine’s Day!

Don’t forget about the ocean this Valentine’s Day! If you are jaded by the traditional cards, flowers, chocolates, and balloons that flood the stores during this time of year, take a different route this year and show the ocean some love.

Here are some tips to make this Valentine’s Day a little more “blue”:

  • Buying flowers can be risky business–many growers use pesticides and fertilizers that end up in the water system. Imported flowers may also be a vessel for new floral diseases and invasive pests. A collection of seashells would be a beautifully unique alternative to the bouquet.
  • Seashells are also great for jewelry. If you look closely, you’ll find that many shells are conveniently “predrilled” for you. (Check back to our blog soon for more on this neat phenomenon.) Try out this craft from Martha Stewart, but instead of buying shells use some leftover from your last beach visit.
  • Whether you and your sweetheart are going out or staying in for dinner, choose a sustainable seafood as the star of your feast. Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch program, offers great resources to help you make the best choices when it comes to seafood.
  • Ok, this last one is a little cliche, but take a long walk down the beach. The ocean is amazing, so go out and enjoy it!

One of the best things you can do in the name of ocean conservation is to share your love for that big, blue, mysterious and wonderful body that makes up so much of our planet! Inspire someone you love to love the ocean, too!

We would love to hear what other ideas you have for ocean friendly celebrations!
