We are very pleased to bring one of the best speakers on Ocean Advocacy in the world to Sanibel this month. I have had the pleasure to hear many good speakers talk about issues that our ocean and our ocean society faces, and Vikki is one of the very best you will ever hear.
Ms. Spruill is the president and CEO of Ocean Conservancy, a forty year-old, national, leading nonprofit organization that translate threats into sound, practical policies on behalf of the ocean. Vikki and the Ocean Conservancy encourage us to take a hard look beneath the surface to see where the health of our planet really begins: our oceans. From the Arctic to the Gulf of Mexico to the halls of Congress, she leads the organization’s efforts to restore the health and resiliency of the ocean through advocating sustainable solutions based on sound science.
This event provides an exciting opportunity for our community to learn more about national and global issues that affect Sanibel Island and the Gulf of Mexico. Drawing from Ocean Conservancy’s decades of work in the Gulf region and her own connection to the beaches of Florida, Vikki will address fisheries and restoration in the Gulf of Mexico, ocean acidification, trash in our ocean, and how seashells can inform and inspire us to understand and promote healthy oceans.
Throughout her career, Vikki has helped make ocean issues accessible and engaging to the general public. Prior to taking the helm at Ocean Conservancy, Vikki founded SeaWeb, a nonprofit organization that advances ocean issues through strategic communications and social marketing. For 11 years, she led the organization in passing regulations to prevent overfishing and shift market demand toward environmentally-friendly seafood. Her work at SeaWeb was built on a 15-year career in public relations, including five years as a senior vice president at Ruder Finn, one of the largest independently held public relations firms in the world.
Vikki serves on a number of national advisory boards including The Ad Council, SkyTruth and Tides, and is a frequent speaker on solutions for ocean conservation. She graduated cum laude from Loyola University in New Orleans with a bachelor’s degree in communications and received a master’s degree in communications from the University of West Florida.
Please join Sanibel Sea School in welcoming Vikki Spruill into our community. Together, we can spark a sea change that will allow people to enjoy Sanibel’s ocean environment for generations to come.
